What I wore to a black-tie wedding (and why I'm obsessed)

You know how you always dread those formal dress codes? Like, okay, I have to find something “elegant” but also not drop my whole rent check on it. I was fully prepared to be disappointed. Tried on a couple things at the mall and everything either made me look like a bridesmaid from 2012 or cost like $400.

Then I found this one online. Black, simple but not boring, you know? The fabric is this really deep, rich shade – not that cheap shiny black that washes you out in photos. Under the venue lights it looked expensive. Like, multiple people asked me where I got it, and when I told them the price their eyes got big.

I think I paid seventy something? Maybe eighty. Either way, it was a steal.

Fit check real quick – I'm 5'4, got a size 8. The length hit right at my ankles, no hemming needed, which honestly never happens for me. I usually have to take everything to my mom or just suffer with dragging hems. This one just worked. And it was snug in the right places but not tight, if that makes sense. I ate a full dinner (three courses, no shame), danced to basically every song, even helped the bride fix a bustle situation in the bathroom – still felt great.

I think the best part is just that feeling when you don't have to overthink your outfit. Like you put it on, you look good, you forget about it. That's rare for me. Usually I'm tugging at something or wishing I'd worn different shoes.

So yeah. This black formal dress is going in the “keep forever” section of my closet. Right next to my one pair of jeans that actually fit and that sweater I stole from my ex.

Oh and side note – the website photos were terrible. Blurry, weird lighting, looked like something from 2010. I almost didn't buy it. So I guess the lesson is sometimes you just gotta take a chance? Or I got lucky. Probably both.
